Helping your family avoid problems in retirement & after you're gone.

Your Retirement Accounts—and Everything Else
Long before Bill Gates built Microsoft, his grandfather, William Henry Gates Sr., was building something quieter: a better starting point for his family. With limited formal education, he built a successful furniture business in Bremerton, Washington, helped create financial stability for his family, and passed along the expectation that the next generation could go farther than the one before it. His son, Bill Gates Sr., went on to become a prominent attorney. His grandson would eventually build one of the most influential companies in the world. The grandfather never had to know where the story would end. His job was to make the next chapter possible.
That is how we think about the families we serve. You spent a lifetime working, saving, and creating opportunities so your children and grandchildren could build lives of their own. But financial security is fragile. One mistake can undo years of careful planning. And retirement accounts deserve special attention because they are different from everything else you own. They have their own distribution rules, tax consequences, beneficiary rules, and rules for the family members who inherit them. That is why we specialize in retirement account distributions. Our work is about helping protect the opportunity you spent a lifetime creating so it can continue benefiting your family long after those retirement accounts pass from your hands to theirs.
What We Do
- ✓
Retirement account distributions. We specialize in the distribution phase, when retirement-account rules, taxes, and decisions can cause problems.
- ✓
Retirement accounts first. They have the biggest tax saving opportunities and hold the majority of risk for retirees and their family.
- ✓
Family protection first. Before any other aspect of retirement planning, we ask: if I died tomorrow, am I sure my family will be protected?
- ✓
Tax planning considers the whole family. It's impossible for us to advise on any aspect of retirement distributions without considering the family who will receive it next.
- ✓
Owner + family relationship. We help retirees during life and once they're gone, we help their family navigate difficult retirement distribution rules and avoid problems.
and Don't Do.
- ×
Accumulation planning. We are not focused on helping people build retirement accounts while they are still accumulating.
- ×
Treat every asset the same. Traditional planning doesn't properly separate retirement accounts from everything else, causing missed opportunities & future mistakes.
- ×
Prioritize other planning first. For our clients, protecting their family has been the reason behind everything they've done in life. We don't believe retiring should change that.
- ×
Tax planning only for the retired couple. Though this seems simpler, it can overlook significant tax-planning opportunities and create costly problems for the family.
- ×
Owner-only relationship. Planning only for the owner can leave the family unprepared for the difficult decisions that begin when retirement accounts are inherited.
CO-FOUNDER & PRINCIPAL
Bill Sharpe
Financial Planner
Bill Sharpe believes retirement planning is about identifying and avoiding future problems. That's why he focuses on retirement account distributions and the common mistakes made from distribution rules, taxes, RMDs, beneficiary decisions, estate planning, and inherited retirement accounts. He has written numerous articles, blogs, and booklets on retirement distribution rules, with a simple goal: make people aware of the potential problems, and plan accordingly before mistakes happen.
